Will an Aftermarket Exhaust Improve the Sound?

Will an Aftermarket Exhaust Improve the Sound?

Posted by Sean@topspeed on 7th Dec 2022

Aftermarket exhaust will almost always change the sound of your vehicle. But that doesn’t always mean it will improve the sound. How an exhaust sounds is very subjective so what may sound amazing to you may be very unappealing to another. It all depends on what you are trying to achieve with the sound. Some drivers prefer a loud, aggressive exhaust so they may choose a straight pipe muffler delete system to insure you know they are coming from miles away! Other drivers may prefer to not increase the volume of their exhaust, but they just want it to be more appealing or sound more aggressive. In that case they may go for a high-flow resonator system with higher flow mufflers, but not necessarily increase the pipe diameter. Our goal at Top Speed Pro 1 Performance is to design and manufacture exhaust systems that will increase performance while also giving you a more aggressive and appealing sound from the exhaust. There are numerous videos on YouTube of our customers who have tried our exhaust systems over several other brands and liked ours the best, especially when our products often are less expensive than our competitors. It is well known that certain makes and models of European cars just don’t sound very good from the factory. For example, Top Speed Pro 1 Performance recently had a customer with a Mercedes Benz S65 AMG Twin Turbo that just sounded very pedestrian! He wanted to make that engine sound as well as it performed. So, we did a custom exhaust for him with larger diameter straight pipes that turned that car into a complete monster!

Here are the factory pipes below. See how the mid-pipe is mashed in the middle? That is from the factory! No wonder it sounds terrible! We knew we had to replace this poor design with something

that would let the engine breathe and remove all that dirty combusted air out of the engine. Also, turbo engines typically sound less aggressive than a naturally aspirated engine. This is due to the natural aspiration creating more overall exhaust notes than the turbo. The turbo charger pushes the air at a much higher rate which bypasses the natural aspiration resulting in less overall exhaust sound. Therefore, many drivers love the performance of their turbocharged engines but are not as pleased with the sound. This is where an aftermarket exhaust can pick up the slack and give you the best of both worlds!

Below you can see we custom-fabricated a much more open custom x-pipe that allows much higher exhaust flow. Not only will this perform better but this design allows you to truly hear the beautiful growl of that twin-turbo V-8 AMG engine. We simply welded the new pipes to his existing straight pipes, and he was able to use his existing tips. The customer was very pleased!
